CD Review by
365ink's Mike Ironside

I’m either the perfect guy to review this CD or the worst.

As a former festival guy for downtown development not-for-profit Dubuque Main Street, I had the pleasure of working with nearly all of the bands on this compilation CD. Not only have I taken the time at the event to actually listen to them (in between checking on the vendors’ power needs and doing a quick quality control assessment of the Jaycees products), I have also heard their recordings. These guys are good. I already know that. You probably know that too. You don’t get to play All That Jazz until your band is really, really good. So you think your gonna get an “objective” review?

But here’s the thing: upon listening, it really is a good CD. It’s got great original songs by all the big favorites and a few by some bands that should probably make another appearance some time. If you like the festival, buy the CD, pick up some Bud Light, some Amber Bock and invite seven or eight-thousand of your closest friends over. Oh, and pick up some Sugar Rays. I’ll meet you by the dance floor.

History of Dubuque...and All That Jazz!

Dubuque…and All That Jazz! emerged from the ideas of several downtown advocates searching for ways to draw more people to downtown. July 24, 1992, Jazz celebrated its first concert with “The Salsa Band” under the Town Clock. About 800 people were in attendance. The following year, a concert in June was added, and attendance grew steadily. Over the past 15 seasons, Jazz has been a resilient presence in downtown, witnessing many changes, several expansions, and even a hail storm. To date, some 8,000 people attend the free summer concert series the months of June, July, August and September.

Currently, there are nine committee members that meet year round to plan the summer concert series. This free summer concert series and premier downtown festival would not be possible without the dedicated Main Street board members, volunteers, as well as cash and in-kind sponsors, believing in the power of an “idea.”
